Riding to the Ritz on Metrolink

Julie's company had a reception last night at the St. Louis Ritz-Carlton. She'd been working their conference since 5:45 yesterday morning, and the plan was for me to stop in for nibbles at the reception, then take her home at 9:30pm. Since the price of a return ticket plus a one-way ticket on Metrolink is cheaper than parking at the Ritz (and a whole lot more pleasant), I got myself gussied up and hopped on the train at Shrewsbury.

I hadn't been in the Forsyth station, yet. It's beautiful.

More from the antique shop

We did go back to the antique shop in SoHa for Julie's faux pearls. She'll wear the whole shebang tonight.

I admit it: I want that silver shell-shaped muffiner thing.

Saturday Night Bonfire

Our last shopping stop of the day was at Wittu's - we needed marshmallows. You can't have a bonfire without marshmallows. (No, that's not my truck.)

My favorite mudball, Jordan.

Finally, fire.

3rd Friday @ 3rd Degree Glass

I always have a good time at 3rd Friday. Next month is their big 5 year anniversary, and it should be a hoot.

Shopping in SoHa

SoHa= St. Louis' South Hampton neighborhood. It's where we live.

Julie's going to a swanky dinner next weekend, so we went out yesterday and bought her a little black dress. On the way, we stopped by this little antique shop that just opened in the neighborhood to peek at their costume jewelry. Now that she has the dress, we're going back today to find something that will match.

Sunday @ Susala Mexican Cafe and Restaurant

After MOCRA, Julie was ravenous. We decided it was a good time to try the new place down the road from us: Susala Mexican Cafe and Restaurant. While Julie enjoyed the salsa...

I enjoyed the thrifty nature of their furnishings.
IMG_1032

Okay, I admit it - I ate some of the salsa, too. This was Julie's cucumber salad.

I didn't get a picture of my sopes. I just devoured them.

Sunday @ MOCRA

SLU's Museum of Contemporary Religious Art opened another winner of a show, Sunday-
The Celluloid Bible: Marketing Films Inspired by Scripture.

I enjoyed the opening lecture by the collector, art historian Rev. Michael Morris, O.P. Some people, however, couldn't keep their noses out of their new-found vintage 50's fiction.

Saturday @ GroveFest: the ARRG Audience

Before I get to the main feature, I thought I'd share a few views of the very lively fashion show / roller derby audience. I'm really sorry I missed my shot of the stoner who came out of the bleachers and tried to sit on my lap. (I was standing.) Julie thinks I scared him. She thinks I gave him that look.

I don't know what she's talking about.

Anyway, here are some other enthusiastic patrons of the night.

More grainy fashion fun.

Saturday @ Grovefest: Spankys Fashion Show 1

Julie & I picked up Cath on our way to catch some ARRG action at Grovefest. This year we were treated to two fashion shows before the exhibition match. Yeah, you know this one was my favorite.

Saturday @ Apop Records

I love this store.

IMG_0830
Yes, we did buy everything in that stack on the floor, and more. I am very happy with issue #53 of Modern Drunkard, Bowie: The Video Collection and a cd of Clara Rockmore's Lost Theremin Album. Julie couldn't believe her luck in finding a paperback of The Story of Sigurd the Volsung and the Fall of the Nibelungs. And she found some pulp, too. She loves pulp.

Saturday: Picnic in Carondelet Park

A feast featuring carrot strips, bananas, olive bread, hummus, apples, a little chicken salad for me (the omnivore), and wine. I really didn't want to leave. I had good food. I had a library book full of Margret Burke-White. I was pretty content. Luckily, Julie keeps her eye on the bigger plan, and knows better than to let me lounge all afternoon.

Saturday: Running Errands

I haven't seen the ice cream truck at the Tower Grove Farmer's Market before, but we've been going down to Soulard this summer.

After a quick stop at the vet for pills, we wandered down to the Brentwood Trader Joe's.
